On 16 October, in the context of the “Metals and Inorganics Sectorial Approach (MISA)”, 15 consortia covering close to 300 substances and the main volume of metals, formalised their cooperation with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). Eurometaux, the European non-ferrous metals association, participates in this cooperation. VNMI is a member of Eurometaux.

MISA is a voluntary programme that has three objectives:

  • Improve the completeness and quality of the REACH dossiers/information to be able to identify substances that could be considered of low priority regarding further regulatory activities;
  • Help in solving outstanding technical challenges for the metals/inorganics sector that will allow to improve the relevance of hazard, risk assessment and risk management of metals and inorganics.
  • Allow capacity-building and collective debates to improve registration dossiers and guidance methods for metals/inorganics in an organised and planned way (via thematic workshops)

The MISA Programme

The MISA programme will run for the period 2018-2020 in line with agreed priorities, timings and work packages that have been jointly defined by ECHA and industry and reported in a publicly available MISA general rolling action plan.

By signing the Framework for Cooperation document, REACH consortia/associations proved their commitment in achieving the MISA’s aims by investing the necessary resources to carry out the agreed actions.

The list of MISA substances (about 300) will be published on the ECHA/EM websites, providing authorities and other stakeholders with a clear signal that work is ongoing for these substances. The expected improvement of the Registration dossiers as a result of MISA will reduce the need for Member States’ and ECHA’s regulatory actions on these substances and help prevent developing methods that are not relevant for metals/inorganics.
